Don’t let a weak menu or poor game-plan sack your party

Here are a few snack choices to keep your home team satisfied.

This Sunday brings the mother of all sports events and America’s second biggest food holiday of the year – the big game! Don’t let a weak menu or poor game-plan sack your party. Nothing tackles hunger like meat on game day. Here are a few choices to keep your home team satisfied, so you can focus on cheering your team on to victory.

Pre-game Picks: Kick things off with some hearty finger foods your guests can much on, even after they’ve claimed their spot on the couch. Nachos are a great choice. Taco seasoning and splash of beer bring out the rich flavor of the meat, and you can easily switch things up by using ground beef, chicken, bison, or even chorizo to get the flavor you’re looking for.

Halftime Heroes: No one wants to spend time in the kitchen while the highlights are rolling and the halftime show gets underway. Have some quick heat-and-eat options like pre-cooked meatballs and burgers on-hand to keep the fans full and keep midgame squabbles at bay. Or throw some quick-cooking sausages on the grill at the two-minute warning for a classic combo like sausage and peppers. If you want to kick up the heat, add chopped hot pepper to your relish, or choose spicy sausages like jalapeno cheddar or hatch chili.

Wing It: This weekend, Americans will buy more than 1.25 billion wings, and we can understand why. They’re the perfect spicy, sweet and savory match for ice-cold beers and field goals. But not all wings are created equal. At Whole Foods Market, all of our wings come from chicken farms that have been certified to Global Animal Parntership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Standards, so you can feel confident about how the animal was raised for the meat you’re buying. Classic buffalo wings are the perfect game day wing.

Extra Points: If you really want to go for the win, try beef short ribs. These big, thick juicy ribs deliver tender beef like braised brisket, but are packed with slow-cooked barbecue flavor. All you need is a few simple ingredients and a little prep time. Just make sure you make enough for your group — you’ll have a hard time sharing!

This is my husband’s grandmother’s recipe. She always had a bowl of it in her fridge ready to serve!

Block of Monterrey Jack CheesePickled JalapenosMayonnaise

Grate the block of cheese ( tip: Don’t buy the pre-shredded cheese, it doesn’t turn out the same for whatever reason)Dice jalapenos – amount depends on how spicy you like it!Mix in diced jalapenos. Pour in a tiny bit of jalapeno juice from the jar. Mix in a small amount of mayonnaise. Stir all together. The key is not to add too much mayo. You need just enough to bind it together.

You can serve right away, but I think it always tastes better if you let it sit overnight. Serve with Fritos Scoops or tortilla chips!

When I want a taste of home, Skyline is my go to! It’s the one, true Cincinnati chili. One of the best ways to enjoy Skyline is in this dip. It is totally addictive… so says the girl from the Queen City

1 Can of Skyline Chili ( no beans )1 block of Philadelphia Cream Cheese1 bag of Finely Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese

This is a Cincinnati delicacy! Cans of Skyline Chili are hard to come by. I have my family send me them! But you can also order them online on Amazon, of course! Sometimes, I do find them in Harris Teeter.

Spread cream cheese on bottom of baking pan.Pour Chili on top of cream cheese.Cover entire top with Cheddar Cheese

Heat in oven until cheese is slightly melted and chili is bubbling through. Serve with Fritos Scoops or tortilla chips!

Air fryer Super Bowl snacks that are easy to make

1. Buffalo chicken wonton bites.

A little bit spicy, a little bit sweet, these snacks are great for the adults in the family. Just dip in some ranch or sweet chili sauce.

  • 1 cup of shredded chicken (just boil and shred first)
  • 1 tbsp. Frank’s buffalo sauce
  • 8 oz. cream cheese
  • ¼ cup chopped green onions
  • 12 wonton wrappers

Mix the first five ingredients together using a fork. Lay out your wonton wrappers on a flat surface, and wet the edges using a pastry brush and water (or your finger). Add one spoonful of mixture to the center of each wonton, pinch the edges together to seal, and pop in the air fryer. Cook for about 4 minutes at 400 degrees.

2. Jalapeno poppers.

Who doesn’t like a good jalapeno popper for a Super Bowl snack? We’ve got you covered.

  • 8 large jalapenos, sliced lengthwise and de-seeded
  • 8 pieces of bacon
  • 8 oz. cream cheese
  • ¾ cup of jack cheese
  • 1 tsp. cumin

Mix the cheeses and cumin together, and stuff each jalapeno half with the mixture. Use a slice of bacon to wrap up each jalapeno, and place in the air fryer (make sure to spray with non-stick spray first). Cook for about 8 minutes at 350 degrees. The cheese should look toasty and slightly brown when they’re ready.

3. Fried pickle spears.

The ultimate finger food, these fried pickle spears go great with some ranch dressing (or maybe even some avocado ranch?) You can also add in some cayenne if you want them a bit spicy.

  • 12 pickle spears
  • ½ cup flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup panko or bread crumbs
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)

Line up three bowls: one with the flour, one with the eggs, and one with the panko or bread crumbs. Use a whisk to beat the two eggs, and mix in the salt, Italian seasoning, and optional cayenne into the bread crumbs or panko. Then, spray the air fryer with non-stick spray.

Next, take each pickle spear and dip it into the flour (making sure it’s full coated), then the eggs, and then the panko mix. Spread the spears evenly across the air fryer basket and cook at 400 degrees for about 7 to 8 minutes.

4. Air-fried chicken wings.

You can’t have the Super Bowl without wings, right? This dry rub wing recipe is all you need to satisfy that craving.

  • 16 chicken wings/drumsticks
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. paprika
  • 1 tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 tbsp. garlic salt
  • ½ tbsp. cayenne pepper
  • ½ tbsp. black pepper
  • Olive oil spray

Mix all the dry ingredients in a gallon-sized Ziplock bag. Spray your wings with an olive oil spray, toss in the bag, and shake until all the wings are well-covered. Then, spray your air fryer basket with non-stick spray, place the wings in evenly (being careful not to overlap), and cook at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes. Use tongs to flip the wings about 8 minutes in. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may have to do your wings in batches.

5. Homemade corn nuts.

Just want a yummy Super Bowl snack mix to crunch on? Try these homemade corn nuts. You can customize by adding your favorite spices.

  • 14 oz. dried hominy
  • 3 tbsp. canola oil
  • 1.5 tsp. salt
  • 1.5 tsp. cayenne pepper, Old Bay seasoning, or ranch dressing mix (optional based on what flavor you want)

Fill a large bowl with water, and soak the hominy kernels overnight. In the morning, pat the kernels dry using a paper towel, and lay out on a large tray to continue drying. After about 30 minutes, place the kernels in a bowl, pour in your oil, and add in the salt and seasonings. Stir until evenly coated. Then, put a layer of kernels at the bottom of the air fryer basket and cook for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Make sure to shake the basket a few times throughout. Repeat with the remaining kernels until all are complete.
