Sam's Club Chicken Recalled After Plastic Pieces Found in Meat

Sam's Club Chicken Recalled After Plastic Pieces Found in Meat

The USDA says there were multiple complaints before 48 tons of the Sam's Club product were recalled.

If you're a frequent Sam's Club shopper, you might want to check your pantry in light of a massive recall just announced by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. Nearly 100,000 pounds of canned chicken breast have been contaminated with large pieces of plastic, and the company who makes the product for Sam's Club is issuing a warning after customers found the nasty surprise in their meals.

The affected product is under Sam's Club's private brand, Member's Mark, and is labeled as "Natural Chunk Chicken Breast" in stores and online.

The canned chicken was shipped nationwide to all U.S. stores, and to third-party restaurants and businesses, so there's a good chance your Sam's Club chicken breast could be at risk. The USDA is labeling it a Class 1 Recall, meaning there's a chance that eating the chicken could cause serious health-related issues, or even death.

The plastic was discovered in the affected chicken by several consumers. Tony Downs Food Co. Inc. of Minnesota, the company responsible for manufacturing the product, received multiple complaints from customers who bit into the plastic firsthand, according to Food Safety News.

If you have purchased Member's Mark canned chicken breast in the last two months, the 50-ounce cans affected by the recall bear the lot code 17332, case code 9817, and a use-by date of November 28, 2019. The recall also applies to six-packs of Member's Mark Premium Natural Chunk Chicken Breast.

The USDA asks those who have the affected product to either return it to your local Sam's Club or to simply throw it away.

The Best 5-Ingredient Copycat Costco Rotisserie Chicken You Can Make At Home

Honestly, it's hard to beat Costco's rotisserie chicken. It ranked number one as our top choice for grocery store rotisserie chickens for a reason: It's not only less expensive than an uncooked chicken (still available for $5, despite the rise in chicken prices), but it's also juicy, moist, tender, and flavorful. So why even try to make a copycat recipe at home? Could it possibly taste any better than the original?

After we read that Julia Child said the test of a good chef is "a perfectly roasted chicken," we knew we had to try. A whole roast chicken might be a simple meal, but it's elegant enough to serve for company when hosting a dinner party. It's also inexpensive enough to make a filling family meal, so we thought we'd try our hand at perfecting roast chicken with a replica of Costco's rotisserie chicken.

When we took on the challenge, we found out it is not only possible, but we could also do it with only five ingredients. Read on to learn how to make the 5-ingredient copycat Costco rotisserie chicken you can make at home.

Consumer complaints spur recall of canned chicken nationwide

Tony Downs Food Co. Inc. of Minnesota is recalling 48 tons of canned chicken packed under the Sam’s Club Member’s Mark brand because consumers have reported finding pieces of plastic in it, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The company shipped the 96, 384 pounds of canned chicken nationwide. It was also available online. Some of the implicated chicken was sold in 50-ounce cans for foodservice operators.

The problem was discovered March 27 after the firm received two consumer complaints regarding extraneous material contamination.

The Madelia, MN, company produced the thermally processed, commercially sterile, canned chunk chicken breast items Nov. 28 and 29, 2017.

The following products are subject to recall:

  • 5-ounce cans in a case containing six cans of “Member’s Mark PREMIUM Natural Chunk CHICKEN BREAST IN WATER” with lot code 17333, case code 9816 and a use-by date of Nov. 29, 2020 and
  • 50-punce cans in a case containing six cans of “Member’s Mark FOOD SERVICE PREMIUM Natural Chunk CHICKEN BREAST IN WATER” with lot code 17332, case code 9817 and a use-by date of Nov. 28, 2019.

The products subject to the recall have the establishment number “P-65”printed inside the USDA mark of inspection on their labels.

FSIS says this is a Class I recall, meaning there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, but anyone who is concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers who have purchased the chicken should not eat it — throw it away or return it to the place of purchase, according to the FSIS recall notice. Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Steve Suri, director of food safety at Tony Downs, at 507-642-3203 Ext. 1302.

Corona Recalled for Containing Glass Shards

Warmer temps this month means it's time to start sipping spring- and summer-time drinks like gimlets, margaritas, and maybe even Corona with lime. But you may want to put down your beer now that the famous Mexican brand just issued a recall on its bottles&mdashfor containing glass shards. Corona's voluntary recall includes its Corona Extra brew in 12-pack and 18-pack boxes of the 12-ounce clear bottles. The brand explained via press release that the recall is "very limited in scope," with one in every 5,000 bottles affected.

However, it might be best not to risk it, especially at your favorite bar or restaurant, which likely only purchases these bulk boxes of bottles. (Luckily, there are five other summery beers you can (and should) drink instead of Corona.)

To determine if your suds are affected, check the 8-digit production code printed on the neck of the bottle and side panels of the beer cartons. The full list of affected codes are available on the recall portion of Corona's site.

Surprisingly, this isn't the first time a production mishap has caused glass fragments to enter Corona bottles. Back in 2014, the brand had to issue a similar recall to avoid harm to customers from throwing back a few beach beers.

If you have a box of bottles with one of the corresponding production codes, don't drink the beer and throw it out instead. You can get a refund by calling the brand's consumer call center at 866-204-9407. So far, no one has been injured from drinking Corona. That being said, if you do somehow become injured from drinking the beer, consult your doctor immediately and then contact Corona's consumer call center for further information and assistance.

Sam&rsquos Club Vs. Costco Prepared Foods Taste Test

1.) Pan of 6 Stuffed Bell Peppers

Stuffed bell peppers are one of my favorite meals because they feature a roasted bell pepper as a vegetable, rice as a starch, and ground meat as protein, for a completely balanced meal that&rsquos both delicious and filling. They are topped with cheese, and I love how the bell pepper becomes sweet and tender when roasted.

Hip Tip: Make stuffed bell pepper soup as a quick and easy way to enjoy these same flavors in a warm homemade soup, perfect for chilly weather!

Sam&rsquos Club Stuffed Bell Peppers:

  • The price is $3.99 per pound, and my container weighed 2.8 pounds for a total cost of $9.98.
  • The bell pepper roasted nicely and was tender.
  • The peppers had about half the amount of filling than Costco&rsquos. This was the biggest difference. One bell pepper wouldn&rsquot be filling as a meal in my opinion.
  • Taste and flavor was good, noticed slightly less spice and flavor than Costco&rsquos.
  • It had a slightly more cheese to meat ratio, which was yummy.

Costco Stuffed Bell Peppers:

  • The price is $4.29 per pound and my container weighed 3.48 pounds for a total cost of $14.93.
  • These peppers have twice as much filling than Sam&rsquos Club. In fact, the cook time was also much longer at 60 minutes.
  • The roasted pepper was also sweet and tender.
  • The sauce with the filling was more flavorful, and moist, plus I loved the addition of fresh parsley and herbs.

Result: Costco is the Winner!

I love the taste and texture so much! There is so much more meat and rice filling per pepper, so to me it&rsquos definitely worth the extra per pound cost for the Costco peppers! 4/4 of my family members voted Costco!

It&rsquos worth noting that the Sam&rsquos Club peppers are also tasty, but if I had to choose one, I&rsquod pick the Costco version of stuffed peppers over Sam&rsquos Club.

2.) Chicken Pot Pie

Chicken pot pie is a classic childhood favorite with a creamy filling of veggies and chicken and then topped with a flaky crust, which most of us know is the best part! It&rsquos pretty much the definition of comfort food, yet it&rsquos a bit labor intensive to make completely from scratch so buying it prepared makes sense for busy evenings!

Both the Costco and Sam&rsquos Club pies have 18 servings and take about an hour to bake in the oven.

Hip Tip: I make an easy Sheet Pan Chicken Pot Pie using puff pastry as a shortcut and it&rsquos delicious!

Sam&rsquos Club Chicken Pot Pie:

  • The price is $3.84 per pound and my container weighed 4.11 pounds for a total cost of $17.98.
  • Its filling has more of a creamy white color and thinner texture with frozen peas and carrots.
  • The chicken texture seemed more boiled and soggy, and my slice had a giant thick piece of rubbery chicken skin. Thumbs down on the chicken in this pie.
  • The taste of the filling however was delicious. It reminded me more of a Marie Callender&rsquos frozen chicken pot pie, which we are big fans of.
  • The crust was very flaky and buttery, yet noticeable thinner in texture than Costco&rsquos.

Costco Chicken Pot Pie:

  • The price is $3.29 per pound and my container weighed 5.53 pounds for a total cost of $18.19.
  • The veggies in this pie are larger and fresh &ndash not frozen.
  • The filling in this pie is more of a translucent color, and has more fresh herb flavor. It&rsquos more of a gourmet or grown up tasting pot pie than the Sam&rsquos Club for sure.
  • The chicken pieces are SO MUCH BETTER! There are lots of nice pieces of roasted chicken in here that have lots of flavor.
  • The crust is thick and SO perfect.

Result: Costco is the winner!

This Costco chicken pot pie was the clear winner with a 4/4 majority vote from my family. It&rsquos interesting too that the per pound cost is a little higher on the Sam&rsquos Club version, but I think the quality of ingredients is higher with the Costco version, and seems more gourmet.

I will say that the flavor of the Sam&rsquos Club cream filling was actually my favorite taste-wise, but I couldn&rsquot get past the soggy tasteless pieces of chicken, and if I had to pick one over the other, I&rsquod go with Costco!

3. Tray of Chicken Alfredo

Chicken alfredo is a rich, creamy pasta dish featuring lots of parmesan cheese, butter, and cream. It&rsquos a crowd-pleasing savory Italian dish that my family sure loves. My kids like to order this meal at restaurants, so I was excited to try this take and bake version from both Sam&rsquos Club and Costco!

Hip Tip: You can make homemade chicken fettuccine alfredo right in the Instant Pot! It&rsquos super easy to make using that method!

  • The price is $3.99 per pound and my container weighed 2.8 pounds for a total cost of $9.98.
  • Spiral noodles are used in this version.
  • The ratio of chicken to pasta was much less, meaning it was mostly pasta.
  • I followed directions on the package, but would maybe cover the dish in foil next time to avoid drying out. It was pretty dry.
  • It was tasty, but seemed to lack sauce, which meant it lacked flavor compared to Costco&rsquos.

Costco Chicken Alfredo:

  • The price is $3.99 per pound and my container weighed 4.08 pounds for a total cost of $16.28.
  • The Costco version has penne noodles and tons of creamy and cheesy sauce. The sauce itself was very flavorful and appealing.
  • There was also so much YUMMY chicken. I loved that they did not skimp on the chicken and it genuinely tasted great!

Result: Costco is the winner!

It&rsquos so interesting that the cost per pound is the same for this dish, yet they are pretty different. Costco&rsquos has much more sauce and chicken, and was overall a better tasting experience. 4/4 of us votes for this Costco version of chicken alfredo!

WORST: Totino's Pepperoni Pizza Rolls

Per 6 rolls (85 g) : 220 calories, 8 g fat (2 g saturated fat, 0 g trans fat), 380 mg sodium, 30 g carbs (1 g fiber, 2 g sugar), 6 g protein

While this nutrition information might not look too bad, you have to remember that it's only for six pizza rolls. Six pizza rolls are not very many, and you're not getting much nutritional value out of those. If you eat two serving sizes, which is probably closer to what an adult might eat during a meal, you're taking in a lot of sodium and a lot of carbs without much fiber or protein, unfortunately.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posts food safety alerts and investigation notices for multistate foodborne disease outbreaks. Click on the link below for a list of the latest outbreaks.

What Is an Outbreak?

A foodborne outbreak occurs when two or more people get the same illness from the same contaminated food or drink. When an outbreak is detected, public health and regulatory officials work quickly to collect as much information as possible to find out what is causing it so they can take action to prevent more people from getting sick. This action includes warning the public when there is clear and convincing information linking illness to a contaminated food. Federal, state and local officials may investigate an outbreak, depending on how widespread it is.
