My son, husband and I went blackberry picking and had a kilo of blackberries so I decided to use these and no apples. I omitted the water as the blackberries were pretty juicy already. I omitted the walnuts as we don't like nuts and I didn't have any baking powder. Turned out fantastically tasty. Really like the crumble on the top and it's a winner all round. I would make it exactly the same next time. Thanks for sharing!-10 Sep 2013

Easy Fruit Crumble Recipe

Fruit Crumble is such an easy recipe to put together – you will wonder why you don’t make crumbles more often! It only takes 5 minutes or so, to prepare and then it goes in the oven! As always Bramley apples tend to be the best sort for a crumble, but if you have some other apples available to you, then try them out in this recipe. If the apples are sweet, add much less sugar.

In this crumble recipe I added some oats to the topping to get an oatier taste and a crisper texture, but you can use the crumble topping from the Apple Crumble recipe if you prefer. You can adjust the quantity of fruit, according to how many blackberries you have gathered, so don’t worry if you want to use a few more, or a few less blackberries.

The crumble can be served hot, straight out of the oven or as a cold dessert – especially if there is some left over. Serve with custard, cream, ice cream or evaporated milk – which ever is your favourite.

It is best to prepare the crumble first before peeling the apples, so the peeled apples are covered as quickly as possible with the crumble, to prevent them going brown.

If you have plenty of fruit, make two or more and put some in the freezer for a treat another day! This also makes efficient use of the hot oven while it is on!

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

Peel, core and chop the apples into small chunks. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice over the apple and mix well. This not only adds flavour but prevents the freshly peeled apples from discolouring.

Layer the apples, blackberries, and sugar in a large pie dish (a lasagne dish is ideal).

Place the flour in a large bowl and then rub in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs - leave a few lumps of butter so that the topping is not too fine. Add the muesli or oat/seed/nut mixture and the sugar and mix through.

Use a spoon to sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit. Bake for 45 minutes or until the fruit is cooked and bubbling juices seep through the topping.

Apple Blackberry Crumble Recipe

This super tasty dessert is a wonderful balance of flavors! I like to combine a sweet but firm variety for my apple baking, so I suggest using either Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp apples.

If you want a semi-tart variety with firm texture choose either Granny Smith, Braeburn or Jonagold.

Depending on your chosen variety, and how perfectly ripe and plump your blackberries are, you may choose to omit any additional sugar. This is my preference for the fruit filling, for this recipe, with a sweet variety apple.

This option also helps to avoid the issues of having filling that gets too soggy. Sugar combines with your fresh fruit and draws moisture out, so using an apple variety that is sweet enough on its own is a best practice to prevent runny fillings.

What's The Difference Between A Crisp and A Crumble?

The difference is based largely upon where you live. In the UK, crisp and crumble are, generally speaking, used interchangeably. I think that holds true with the US as well.

Most people I know have always referred to a dessert with a crumb or crumble topping containing things like oats, nuts or seeds as a crisp. My blackberry crisp ( similar to this crumble ) is a perfect example of what is considered a 'crisp' dessert.

Things with a streusel type topping ( like Dutch Apple Pie ) usually have their own name or will be called so-and-so with streusel topping, like my banana bread with streusel. The exception to that is coffee cake, most varieties have either a sugar or brown sugar streusel.

Other desserts in the same family but made with a batter topping are called cobblers, like my nectarine cobbler.

Should I Peel The Apples?

I've seen quite a few recipes and recommendations to remove apple peels before baking in crisps, crumbles, pies, etc. I don't agree with that but feel that it is a personal preference.

I'm usually one of those people that is super sensitive to weird texture combinations, and I have to say that the stray apple peel has never ruined a dish for me. Shrug. Call me crazy!

So by all means, if you feel the need to peel your apples, go right ahead and do it! If you want to save that prep time and need a dessert fast, slice and bake this up in a hurry. You'll love it either way!

I will concede that apple pies may be the exception to whether or not an apple should be peeled. The biggest factor on deciding whether or not to peel my apples would be based on which apple variety I was using. Shiny skinned apples tend to have thicker peels, like McIntosh or Red Delicious.

How To Make Irish Apple Blackberry Crumble

Preheat your oven to 375 ºF ( 190 ºC ) and butter or grease your eight individual ramekins or either a 2 qt baking dish or 9 x 13 baking pan. 375 ºF ( 190 ºC ) for approximately 40 - 45 minutes, or until bubbly and golden.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 - 15 minutes before serving.

Storage & Reheating Apple Blackberry Crumble

Store any unused apple blackberry crumble in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Note that your crispy crumble topping may suffer soggy results when refrigerated.

My special notes on crisps and crumbles are as follows:
When I bake a crisp or crumble, I try to make it either a) just large enough for the right amount of servings desired or b) use individual ramekins for the desired servings.
Otherwise, make your fillings and store them either refrigerated or frozen in an air tight container or freezer storage bag. Mix your crumble topping, minus any butter, and store in a separate storage bag. Assemble, add butter, and bake on demand when desired.

Reheat portions by placing desired portion in an oven safe dish and warm at 350 degrees F ( 175 degrees C ) until heated through. This method can bring the crispness back to your crumble topping in the first few days of being refrigerated!

For quick reheating, microwave in 30 second increments until warmed to your desired temperature.

Q: My crumble isn't crumbly looking, what went wrong?

A: The butter amount can directly affect how your crumble topping turns out with any fruit crumble or crisp recipe.

Alot of crisps and crumbles have you cut in cold butter for your topping mixture, or pour melted butter over the assembled dish. Any which way you made it, sometimes things simply don't turn out quite right. yet.

The biggest thing to avoid is using too much butter. Too much butter makes an oily mess, and is hard to salvage.

Too little butter, and you have a dry topping. Or a patchy topping that results from the butter being concentrated in one area over your dessert.

The general rule to follow, no matter the recipe ( as there are literally as many crisp and crumble recipes as there are moms with kitchens! ) is to use 2 parts flour or dry ingredients for 1 part fat or butter.

Apple and Blackberry Crumble

This easy apple and blackberry crumble recipe shows you how to make a delicious traditional British dessert with baked fruits. A perfect way to finish off a meal.

Apple and blackberry crumble is one of my wife&rsquos favourite crumble recipes. It makes it even better when you can get all the main ingredients from your own garden.

My last house used to have extensive blackberry brambles (actually I should say was a bit overgrown with them!). I also had a wonderful rhubarb plant and a nice selection of apple trees that I had planted myself 25 years ago.

So we could survive quite happily with our own homemade puddings through the summer months with rhubarb crumble and apple and cherry pie.

But in the fall when the blackberries are nice and ripe this is a perfect dessert to make. Even out of season, like in the winter, fresh apples are always available in the supermarket and we can use frozen blackberries to make this dish. It is, after all, excellent on a cold winter&rsquos day to warm you up!

Here I only had to buy the apples, as I had the rest of the ingredients in the house.

We always have frozen blackberries in the freezer as we often use them to make smoothies for breakfast.

Apple and Bramble Crumble

Bramble is another word used sometimes to describe blackberry fruit. So this recipe is sometimes also called an apple and bramble crumble. Bramble also refers to the prickly shrub the fruit grows on, and believe me once they start growing they can be very difficult to get rid of.

I have a bramble interfering and integrating itself with my hedge in my present back garden which I need to somehow eliminate before it takes over.

Crumble is great way to serve up fruit as a dessert. You can make all sorts of different flavours, depending on what you have available.

I think this simple apple and blackberry crumble recipe is better than a simple apple crumble recipe as it has the added tartness of the blackberries.

Not only does this improve the taste considerably as it gives it a sweet and sour combination, but it improves the colour no end. Look at this!

Apple and Blackberry Crumble Recipe

Of course, there are all sorts of other fruit crumbles you can make summer fruit crumble, berry crumble (think of a berry, any berry!), mix and match crumble, gooseberry, plum. You pick the fruit. Even rhubarb, which is actually a vegetable, makes an excellent crumble.

Crumble topping mix

The secret is getting the crumble topping right. In this crumble topping recipe we have added some flaked almonds.

This gives it a bit of a nutty taste. Also, it is important to add the sugar as the last ingredient to the topping, as this makes it crispier.

You could also add oats to the crumble topping mix if you wish. This would help to make it even crispier.

I hope you enjoy trying this recipe. Please let me know how you get on in the comments section below!
