If you’re going to drink, keep your alcohol intake moderate: studies have shown an increase in abdominal obesity with regular overconsumption of alcoholic beverages. However, recipes like these that are relatively low in sugar are much better for you than the high-fructose corn syrup-laden versions you might find at a chain restaurant.

Calling all margarita lovers! Say hello to your new go-to cocktail and give this low-calorie SkinnyFit margarita recipe a try! If you’re like me then you love yourself a good margarita from time to time but hate the excess calories that comes with them. Margaritas have a bad rap for being high in calories.

This is usually due to the high amount of sugar found in the sweet and sour mix. Sugar is not only a huge culprit for hangovers, but it’s also the number one factor in weight gain. Swapping out the sweet and sour mix with a natural sweetener, like agave, will significantly reduce the amount of calories in your margarita (and might even reduce your risk of a hangover)!

Why is agave so great? Well, to put it simply, agave is very low on the glycemic index compared to other forms of sweetener. Every food is given a glycemic number. This number represents how quickly your body converts the carbs in your food into glucose (our bodies convert carbs into glucose and use it as energy). The smaller the number, the less impact the food has on your blood sugar. Agave has a glycemic index of 13. (To put this into perspective, table sugar has a glycemic index of 68 and honey has a glycemic index of 60.)

So what’s the SkinnyFit solution? Swap out your traditional margarita mix with this low-calorie version instead! You won’t be able to resist the light and refreshing flavors of our SkinnyFit Detox and the agave! The subtle notes of peach and green tea add a boost of flavor and a fat-burning component! Oh yeah, did I mention this recipe is only 5 ingredients?! #Winning

What is the difference between a skinny margarita and a regular margarita?

A skinny margarita is a low-calorie version of a regular margarita.

Instead of using an orange-liqueur like triple sec, Cointreau or Grand-Marnier, a skinny margarita uses fresh orange juice and a small amount of agave nectar.

The result is about 114 calories for a skinny margarita compared to about 256 calories for a classic margarita.

While there is technically less alcohol in this low-cal version, I think it’s a great option for anyone who is trying to watch what they eat and limit their alcohol intake.

And did I mention the flavor is amazing?! It’s so refreshing and made with a natural sweetener, you just can’t go wrong.

A margarita is cocktail made with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice. It’s usually served in a margarita glass (a variant of a champagne coupe) that has been rimmed with salt.

Margaritas can be served frozen, shaken with ice (on the rocks), or straight up.

Traditional margaritas are lime-flavored, but other flavors—like strawberry, peach, and jalapeno—have become popular in recent years.

There are plenty of origin stories for the margarita, but none of them have been confirmed. One common legend holds that it was invented in Tijuana, Mexico sometime in the s or s: Carlos &aposDanny&apos Herrera, owner of a restaurant called Rancho La Gloria, allegedly created the drink for Hollywood actress and customer Marjorie King.

The restaurant’s location—halfway between Tijuana and Rosarito Beach—made it a popular hangout for Hollywood types looking for an escape from the city.

Though King was allergic to most types of liquors, she was able to drink tequila without a reaction.

Herrera devised the tequila-based cocktail with the actress in mind and, before long, the margarita was a staple in bars and restaurants throughout the area.

However, earlier references to the cocktail suggest that this account is likely untrue. In 1936, James Graham, owner and editor of an Iowa newspaper, wandered into a Tijuana bar run by an Irish man named Madden. The bartender was locally renowned for a drink he called the “Tequila Daisy” (“margarita” translates to isy” in Spanish).

𠇊s a newspaperman seeking information, I entered the joint and told Mr. Madden my curiosity was aroused regarding The Daisy,” Graham wrote. “Mr. Madden was not the most talkative of men, but eventually he was persuaded to admit that the drink’s creation was a mistake: ‘In mixing a drink, I grabbed the wrong bottle and the customer was so delighted that he called for another and spread the good news far and wide.’”

No matter when or by whom the drink was created, one thing is certain: The margarita is a staple of Mexican and American cuisines.
